Visit Scienceworks on the opening weekend of the Illuminate exhibition and enjoy shows and activities all about light and optics.

The brand-new exhibition explores the science behind the fastest traveller in the universe – light. Ignite the senses and learn through hands-on interactive play. What is light, what can we do with it and how do we see it?

The Colour Combo Show

12.30 & 1.30pm | Included with museum entry
Light makes our world colourful! Explore how adding and subtracting different light creates a vivid array of colours. What would the world really look like through rose tinted glasses? Discover colour in this 20-minute live show jam packed with vibrant demonstrations.

Glow Lab

10.30am–3pm | Included with museum entry
Explore light and colour in Glow Lab. Make your own party hat and decorate it with invisible UV pens and fluorescent markers. See it glow under UV light. You can even take your colourful creation home!

Light demonstrations

10.30am–3pm | Included with museum entry
Have some fun with mini light demonstrations in the STEM Lab. Can you bend light? Write your name using light? Or trick your brain into seeing colour that isn’t there?

Planetarium shows

11am, 1pm, 2pm, & 3pm | $7–$9 plus museum entry
You can’t have astronomy without light and optics! Sit back and enjoy the wonders of the stars regardless of the time of day – or the weather! All Planetarium shows conclude with a staff-guided What’s in the sky tonight? presentation.

Lights, Energy, Action!

Come to the Lightning Room to see the most awesome source of light – lightning! Explore all things ENERGY in this gameshow-style Lightning Room show that investigates light and other types of energy with all sorts of electrifying demonstrations.

Pumping Station Tour

11am & 1pm | Included with museum entry
Discover the smelly side of Melbourne’s history in this 30-minute tour. Suitable for all ages. Tours run subject to guide availability and weather conditions.

Collections Store Tour

12pm & 2pm | Included with museum entry
Discover rare and unique objects, collected by Museum Victoria over the last 150 years, in this 30-minute tour. Suitable for ages 8 and up. Tours run subject to guide availability and weather conditions.
