the music playground, newport
/Want to find out if you’re living with the next Beethoven? Here’s how to find out. Drop in and check out The Music Playground. It is a buzz of musical energy tucked away in the Challis Street shopping centre in Newport, with classes for newborns all the way up through high school. They also have instrument lessons with something for everyone no matter where they are on their musical journey.
Mamma loves the blend of the Orff, Suzuki and Kodály methods, widely acknowledged as the best ways to teach music to very young children. But that really means nothing to the kids, who just enjoy singing, instruments and dancing. Classes are led by two teachers, meaning your little one will have more individual attention too. The playful approach means that kids forget that they’re learning all the foundational music skills they need for learning an instrument, which can start from 3 years.
And classes aren’t just for little ones. The Music Club programme is for school kids to make ‘music friends’ and provide a pressure-free environment for them to learn performance skills, sing, dance and play music together.
If you’re in the neighbourhood, don’t forget to check out their interactive window display which is a hidden gem in Newport. With treasure hunts and other surprises there is always something different, quirky and fun for kids and adults to stop and see what’s new!
Mamma's special mention: if you have a tot under six months classes are free, because they want every parent to feel more confident making music with their new little one. Music is such a special way to strengthen bonds with a baby.
